Information about Traffic Register Numbers for foreign nationals and qualifying organisations.
Applying for a Traffic Register Number
A Traffic Register Number (TRN) is an identification number accepted for road-traffic transactions on eNaTIS for certain foreigners and organisations that are non-legal persons.
Who may need one?
Foreigners without a suitable foreign identity document may need a TRN if they want to buy or register a vehicle in South Africa. Certain organisations, such as partnerships, one-person businesses, trusts, churches, welfare, educational and recreational organisations and some government/statutory bodies, may also need a TRN.
Proxy and representative
An organisation must identify a representative for each branch or separate address and appoint a proxy by letter of proxy. The same person may act as both. Appropriate identity documentation is required.
