Refund of Motor Vehicle Licence Fees

If your motor vehicle has been stolen, deregistered or declared permanently unfit for use, you may be able to apply for a refund of the licence fee.

Time limit

Apply to the province where the vehicle was registered within three months of notification of the theft or deregistration.

How the refund is calculated

The refund is calculated at one-twelfth of the licence fees paid for each month for which the licence remains valid. Amounts below R100 are not refunded.

What you need

• ID.
• An affidavit confirming the theft, permanent unfitness or deregistration.
• Complete the RLF form.

Processing and cost

The application is processed on the same day, but payment may follow after internal auditing. The service is free.
