Motor Vehicle Licence Renewal
You must renew your motor vehicle licence every year before it expires. If you do not renew it on time, late licensing penalties and arrears may apply.
21-day grace period
The supplied guidance states that there is a 21-day grace period after the licence expiry date. The grace period is calculated from the expiry date of the current licence disc.
Where can you renew?
You can renew through the relevant registering authority or a selected post office that issues motor vehicle licences. Eligible vehicle renewals can also be processed through the official NaTIS online platform.
Renew online through NaTIS
To use the online service, register/login to the official NaTIS platform and use the vehicle renewal option.
- Log into the NaTIS platform.
- Select View Motor Renewals.
- Choose the relevant vehicle/licence disc.
- Enter your bank-card details and pay.
What you need when renewing in person
- ID.
- Proof of residential address.
- Motor vehicle licence renewal notice (MVL2), if received.
- If no renewal notice was received, complete the ALV application where required.
- For a company/organisation-owned vehicle, additional organisation, proxy and registration documents may be required.
Roadworthiness
If the vehicle is used for public transport or is a heavy-load motor vehicle, a roadworthiness certificate may be required.
Why might a disc not be printed online?
- Outstanding licence fees for other unlicensed vehicles owned by you.
- An Enforcement Order against your name.
- The vehicle requires Roadworthy Certification.
- An administration mark prevents issue of the disc.
- A police mark or police clearance is required.
How to avoid an MVLX / no-disc outcome
If you have more than one unlicensed vehicle, ensure the applicable vehicle licences are paid at the same time. Settle Enforcement Orders, complete roadworthiness requirements, resolve administration marks and ensure police verification/clearance where required.
Delivery
The online portal states that licences renewed through the online platform are delivered within 3–5 working days.
If you receive an MVLX
MVLX indicates that no licence disc was printed. The portal advises the owner to apply at the appropriate licensing office for the MVL1 licence receipt with a disc once the conditions for issuing the disc have been met. Pro-rata fees may apply.
Buses
Buses are stated to require bi-annual motor vehicle licence renewal because their roadworthiness certification is valid for six months.
Fees
Licence fees vary. Contact your local licensing office for the current cost applicable to your vehicle and province.
Relevant forms
The online renewal process does not use the ALV in every case. The ALV is particularly relevant where a renewal notice is unavailable or the registering authority requires an application.
